I am a native Kansan, having lived the first part of my life in western Kansas, and the past twenty-seven in Lawrence, Kansas.
My Mother's lengthy illness and death, combined with the loss of three more close family members in one year, heightened my awareness and appreciation for the Simple Gifts that constantly surround us: a butterfly or bee, often gone before we have the opportunity to fully appreciate it's exquisite beauty.
On one of her last trips outside, one of her great grandsons, carefully picked a dandelion puffball and held it up to her face. A look of amusement and recognition replaced the vacant stare. She had not spoken any coherent words for several days, but now spoke very clearly. "You go first and then I'll go first." He blew gently on the puffball and then she did. Through the simple gift of a dandelion puffball, for a moment or so she was with us again. What a blessing.
Experiencing the endless beauty surrounding us provides bridges that connect us with the very essence of life, and each other, and brings joy to our soul. Many of the subjects featured on my pictures and cards are from my yard. When I take the time to look, I am rewarded. I hope you enjoy these Simple Gifts.
